Understanding the fisheries sector and our mission to transform Somalia's fishing industry
Our visionary leadership drives Badmaal Seafood's mission to revolutionize the fishing industry in Somalia.
With decades of combined experience in sustainable fishing practices and business development, our leadership team is committed to creating a positive impact on the fisheries sector while building a thriving, profitable enterprise.
The fisheries sector in Somalia contributes to around 2% of the country's GDP and is predominantly small-scale and is highly impacted by climate change. The sector is underdeveloped albeit its high potential which could be tapped to increase economic opportunities and combat food scarcity challenges in Somalia and the region. Due to protracted conflict crisis that lasted for nearly three decades, there has been few investments in the sector and lack of efforts to maintain the existing infrastructure has exacerbated the situation.
Dedicated to sustainable fishing
This has prevented the domestic trade to develop, hampered access to markets and prevented economic activities to grow due to lack of an enabling policy and regulatory environment. Domestic fish markets are small, dysfunctional, unorganized, undersupplied and the technical know-how and capacity is insufficient. Deeply rooted vulnerabilities due to climate change intersects with poverty to produce recurrent crisis and further undermine development of the sector. Major constraints to the fisheries sector include weak governance and institutions; lacking investments from private and public sectors; illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing in the Somalia coastline; significant post-harvest fish losses; and lack of knowledge about fish trade opportunities and prices in alternative markets.
With a highly urbanizing society and growing need for fish protein, the need for sustainable development of aquatic resources is now felt much more than ever before. Badmaal Seafood as a premier fishing company currently in its startup prides itself as a quality centered local fishing company situated across many areas of Somalia with the unique intention to offer superior seafood products to the local and international markets at the most cost-effective and competitive price. It combines sustainable fishing methods and environmentally friendly practices that minimizes the impact on the surrounding habitats and ecosystems and ensures good management.

Badmaal Seafood business idea of building cold storage and fish processing at Hobyo is an all-encompassing initiative and represents the immediate needs of the population due to the lack of modern and high-quality fish processing plant and cold storage facility in Somalia. Interestingly, Hobyo is one of the most deprived locations in the area, where youth unemployment is very high.
This makes our proposed projects a unique addition to the target area and proposes both short-term and long-term solutions to address the challenges of overfishing, climate change and pollution in Somalia waters. The project is intended not only to generate profit to the shareholders, but also create job opportunities for young people in the area.
This business plan becomes a necessity as the founders of the business seek an investment opportunity to the sum of $700,000 to bring this scalable business idea to life. The said funding shall be used for:
